Are there any contraceptive pills that can be inserted in the vagina?

Q. I am working in Saudi Arabia and my wife is in India. I would like to go on vacation in August. I have three children and the youngest is 2 years old. I want my wife to use contraceptive pills. I am told that there is some pill which can be inserted into the vagina which will be useful for one week. Will it be ok to insert the pill just before intercourse?

A.  There is no vaginal pill of the type you describe that has gone through regulatory review for safety and efficacy. One should never rely on unsubstantiated commercial claims. I strongly suggest you use condoms since they are safe and effective.
