Q. I want to know the merits and demerits of some common fruits used by people like apple, banana, grapes, orange, pineapple etc.

A.  Fruits form a very important part of our diet. They are in rich vitamins and minerals that are vital for our body functions and growth. Fruits form a bulk of dietary fibre required for proper bowel motility along with the importance of fibre in preventing certain diseases such as heart diseases, cancer, diabetes etc. Fruits are a good choice for people involved in weight loss program as they are rich in nutrients and low in calorie and almost nil in fats. They provide lots of colour, texture, and flavour to our diet. Fruits like melons have a high water content which also adds to their nutritive value. Overall, I don't see disadvantage of fruits except that they are low in calorie and proteins and should not be substituted for a meal.
