Q. Hello Doctor, My wife (age 28, wt 74Kgs, height 5ft4In) is 13 weeks pregnant. Oftentimes, she suffers from acidity, heartburn and indigestion. Our OB/Gyn has prescribed Dipep 1tab twice after food. Is Dipep safe during pregnancy? Pls clarify. Other medicine she is taking are: Folwise & MCBM 69 1tab after breakfast. Thanks in advance.

A.  Dipep is the brand name. It is a digestive multiple-ingredient product that contains pepsin, papain, fungal diastase, cellulase. It can be safely taken during pregnancy provided it is effective. Folwise contains folic acid and DHA; MCBM 69 contains folic acid, vitamin B-12 and vitamion B-6. Both of them contain folic acid which is essential during pregnancy but there is no need to take two brands with the same common ingredient. It would be better to take just folic acid (sold as Folet) 5mg daily.
