DoctorNDTV: Does the Indian health care industry have any problems? If yes, how would you tackle these?
Dr Indira Hinduja: Our country is so vast and 70% of the population lives in village areas. It is difficult to reach each and everyone to ensure adequate health care. There are large number of areas where there is no electricity therefore every vaccine can not be preserved to maintain efficacy. However, in villages for every 250 – 300 population, one volunteer should be trained.
 
DoctorNDTV: What, according to you, are the attributes of a good doctor?
Dr Indira Hinduja: The attributes of a good doctor are that he/she should be knowledgeable, kind and should be able to manage a case with available facilities.
 
DoctorNDTV: What has been your most recent professional milestone? What do you think are your greatest achievements?
Dr Indira Hinduja: The birth of Harsha – the first scientifically documented IVF baby is my most recent professional milestone and the development of embryonic stem cells would be my greatest achievement.
 
DoctorNDTV: What is your version of the ideal patient?
Dr Indira Hinduja: An ideal patient is one who is very clear in her mind, has full faith in her doctor, accepts the treatment offered and advise given by the doctor. She or he should be very positive in attitude throughout the treatment.
 
DoctorNDTV: What are your most satisfying patient moments/outcomes?
Dr Indira Hinduja: When a woman becomes pregnant and her eyes show spark and happiness and when she holds the baby after delivery - these two occasions give me immense pleasure and satisfaction.
 
DoctorNDTV: Would you like to tell us about any recent development in your specialty?
Dr Indira Hinduja: The development of embryonic stem cells followed by treatment of degenerative condition by stem cells.
 
DoctorNDTV: Do you think Indian health websites are useful?
Dr Indira Hinduja: Yes, health websites are very helpful. Now more and more people view theseebsites and have the option of selecting their doctor and centre for treatment.
 
DoctorNDTV: What are the new developments in the treatment of infertility?
Dr Indira Hinduja: The day is not far when oocyte and sperm can be developed from stem cells. There is going to be a time when couple can actually select their baby’s characteristics.
 
DoctorNDTV: What is the future of IVF in India?
Dr Indira Hinduja: Not only IVF can be used to overcome infertility but it can also be used for the treatment by cell therapy in diseased, aged or injured tissues.
