Topics of Interest:
  • Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics - Identification of HLA linked susceptibility parameters in various diseases.
  • Identification of HLA gene products at the molecular level. RFLPs and PCR-oligotyping using SSOPs.
  • Molecular basis of susceptibility to infectious and autoimmune diseases.
  • HLA matching and immunological factors in organ and bone marrow transplantation.
Positions held in Relation to Immunology/Immunogenetics:
  • Secretary, Asia Oceania Network for creation of Federation of Immunology (1990-1993)
  • Secretary, INSA National Committee of Immunology (1991-1994)
  • Secretary, Indian Immunology Society (1990-92)
  • Councilatory' from India in several International Histocompatibility Workshops. He has made several original contributions in mycobacterial, autoimmune and rheumatological diseases that have helped greatly in understanding the molecular basis of susceptibility to these diseases.
  • His studies in the transplantation context have revealed that in situations involving live related donor renal transplantation, HLA matching has an overriding influence in long term graft survival. Further, he has identified important immunological predictors for graft rejection, which include quantitation of interleukin-2 receptors, IgG anti-F(ab)2g antibodies and TNF alpha levels. Further importance of flowcytometric crossmatches and regular screening of anti-leukocyte antibodies in the recipient both at the pre as well as post transplant stages has been highlighted in his studies.
  • He has established the Asian Indian Donor Marrow Registry (AIDMR) of voluntary unrelated donors for patients of Asian Indian origin requiring bone marrow transplantation. This registry has already recruited more than 2000 voluntary donors, most of whom are tested for both HLA class I as well as class II genes. The AIDMR has developed functional links with similar international registries which include the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) of USA and the Bone Marrow Donors World Wide (BMDW) of Europe.
  • Professor Mehra has several international recognitions which include the prestigious `Council Membership' of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS). He is the founder Secretary General of the Federation of Immunological Societies of Asia-Oceania (FIMSA), Vice President of the 10th International Congress of Immunology, New Delhi, (Nov. 1998), President of the Asia-Oceania Histocompatibility Federation, President of the Australasian and South East Asian Tissue Typing Association (ASEATTA) and President of the Indian Immunology Society.
  • In 1992, he was awarded the S.S.
