Professor Ravi Bhatia, MBBS, MS, MCh retired as Professor and the Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi in November 1994 to start private practice. Introduced to neurosurgery by Professor Jacob Chandy at CMCH, Vellore, he trained successively with Prof. P.N.Tandon at the AIIMS and the late Prof. Kristian Kristiansen at Oslo (Norway). Whilst in Scandivania he also worked with Prof. Ansgar Torvik in Neuropathology and Prof Lars Leksell in Stereotactic Surgery. His special interests in neurosurgery include neurovascular surgery, surgery for tumours in and around the sella, inflammatory lesions of the brain and spinal cord, craniovertebral anomalies and stereotactic surgery.
His research projects include studies in experimental hydrocephalus, fractures of the skull and anaerobic infections of the brain. These studies were financed by the Indian Council of Medical Research. He has to his credit over 98 publications in national and international journals and books. The latter include the Handbook of Neurology and Textbook on Operative Neurosurgery. Dr. Bhatia has been a reviewer for several national medical journals, a post graduate examiner in neurosurgery at a number of centres, selector for fellowships and an expert on selection committees for the neurosurgical faculty.
On behalf of the National Board of Examinations he has been an inspector for neurosurgical training. He has travelled extensively visiting neurosurgical centres in India and abroad and has also been invited as a visiting lecturer at Neurosurgical centres in the USA, UK, Norway and Pakistan. Over the years he has been a regular participant in National and International Neurosurgical Meetings.
