Prof. Blumgart is currently the Chief of Hepatobiliary Surgical Service at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he holds the Enid A. Haupt Chair in Surgery. He is also the Director of the Hepatobiliary Disease Management Program and is Professor of Surgery at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Prof. Blumgart graduated at the University of Sheffield in England where he was recently bestowed an honorary doctorate in science. He received clinical training and held various posts in the United Kingdom. In particular, he was Professor of Surgery at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Department of Surgery at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School Hammersmith Hospital, London, and prior to coming to New York, was the Director of the Department of Visceral and Transplantation Surgery at Inselspital University of Bern, Switzerland. He has lectured and written extensively on aspects of hepatobiliary surgery. The two-volume text, Surgery of the Liver and Biliary Tract, he has edited is now in its third edition. He has authored over 400 peer-reviewed papers and over a hundred book chapters. He has lectured widely as a Visiting Professor in the United States and abroad. He sits on the editorial board of a number of journals, is an honorary member of a number of societies including the Society for the Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (USA), the Swedish Surgical Society, the Yugoslavian Society of Surgery, and the French Association of Surgeons.
