Dr Sai Praveen Haranath

Senior Consultant Pulmonologist & Critical Care Specialist,
Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, India

I am a specialist in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Some people also call this respiratory or chest medicine and intensive care medicine. I trained at Madras Medical College and then moved to the US and have trained in Connecticut, Chicago and Oregon. I am now in San Francisco area at Kaiser Permanente, which is a large health organization and has the largest group practice of doctors in the world. In my specialty, I see patients with lung problems like cough, wheezing, smoking related lung problems, lung cancer, spots on the lung, pneumonia, lung collapse and fluid accumulation around the lung among many other conditions. I am particularly interested in helping people stop smoking, which is the main cause of most chronic health problems in the world. When I am not in the clinic, I take care of patients in the intensive care unit. This is also called the critical care unit, ICU, intensive care or other names but this is where the sickest patients are treated. Patients are often on breathing machines called ventilators and need a lot of medicines to maintain the normal functioning of the organs. Most patients can make it through a severe illness through intensive care but sometimes we are unable to save them and in that situation we doctors are faced with the difficult but important task of helping the family of the patient during this time. The intensive care unit is a very busy place and it takes a team to make the place work- nurses, nurse assistants, respiratory therapists who help with the function of the breathing machines as well as staff who help with lab work, imaging, feeding, cleaning and maintaining supplies. My role on DoctorNDTV is to help answer any questions pertaining to lung problems and intensive care medicine. As you may know this is not a personal medical consultation but general advice that can be helpful as a starting point in finding an answer to your medical problem. If it is an urgent problem, you should contact your own doctor or hospital immediately. I am a member of the American College of Chest Physicians and am a member of their Disaster Response Network Steering Committee. I have received a few awards during my career so far but what I am happy to do is have the ability to help the poor and underprivileged when possible. I have also written a few articles for medical journals and done clinical research. The great thing about medicine is that the human body is the same- be it in America or in India and this makes it easy for doctors to exchange information around the world. Through this website, I hope to help you in India find relief from your problem. As the saying goes, the role of the doctor is to heal sometimes but comfort always and the word doctor really means ‘to teach’, and hopefully I can accomplish this. My inspiration to pursue this career is my father who was a very humble and accomplished physician and I pray that I can emulate his empathy for his patients. My credentials: Medical College: Madras Internal Medicine Residency: University of Connecticut Medical Center, USA Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship: Loyola University and Oregon Health and Science University Masters in Public Health: University of Connecticut, USA I am American Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
