Dr Surya Bhan had his medical education at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur and obtained his MBBS in 1967, D. Orth in 1970 and MS in 1971. Then he went to UK for further training and obtained his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in 1976. He has worked with many eminent orthopaedic surgeons in India and UK. He joined AIIMS in 1981 and is now a Professor of Orthopaedics. He has initiated many advanced orthopaedic surgical techniques in India and is a renowned expert in the field of knee and hip joint replacements, surgical management of arthritic conditions, trauma and paediatric orthopaedics. He is an excellent clinician and teacher. He has written two books and contributed chapters on orthopaedic diseases in four books. He has 75 research publications to his credit and has given 30 lectures in continuing medical education programmes in the country. He has organised many conferences at the AIIMS and has been a faculty to various other workshops. Many young surgeons have been coming to him for training in arthroplasty procedures. He has set up a bone bank at the AIIMS which is first of its kind in north India. He is widely travelled and has presented his research work at many international conferences and forums.
