Understanding Back Pain
Professor Malcolm Jayson
Family Doctor Publications in association with The British Medical Association, UK
2006, 150 Pages, Price: Rs. 380

This booklet is one of the many very useful Family Doctor Series. The language is lucid and emphasis is given to the salient features of each underlying cause of back pain. Dr Jason who is a Professor of Rheumatology and was Director of the Manchester and Salford Back Pain Centre provides updated views on the latest research and treatment in this area. He explains the kind of attempts that are currently being made to reduce the frequency and severity of this increasingly disturbing reason for working hour loss worldwide. In Britain itself at any one time about 30 to 40 per cent of the population suffer from backache and between 80–90% experience it at some time in their lives. Dr Jason commences with a description of common back problems and their causes. He mentions among others the brief episodes of pain which are acute, disappear altogether and are rarely diagnosed; disc prolapse caused by stress on the spine like bending, twisting or lifting; pain at the bottom of the spine known as coccydinia and sciatica when there is damage to the nerves in the lumbar spine; lumbago and spondylosis caused by wear and tear. He follows up with the various aspects of treatment and then by illustrations and detailed advice on how to protect the back from strain and injury.
